Teaching Kids to Pray: Simple Ways to Start at Any Age

Prayer is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. It connects them to God, reminds them they are never alone, and helps them build a personal relationship with their Heavenly Father. But as parents, we often wonder — How do I actually teach my kids to pray?

The good news is, prayer doesn’t have to be complicated or formal. In fact, the Bible tells us:

“Let the little children come to me… for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” — Matthew 19:14

Children have a natural openness to God, and we can nurture that connection in simple, everyday ways.

1. Model It

Kids learn best by watching. Let them see you pray — whether it’s thanking God before a meal, asking for guidance in a tough moment, or praising Him for a beautiful day. When they see prayer as a normal part of life, it becomes natural for them too.

2. Start with Gratitude

Encourage your child to start by thanking God for the people, things, and moments they love. It might be as simple as:
“Thank You, God, for my family, my puppy, and the sunshine today.”

3. Keep It Short and Simple

Prayer doesn’t need big words or long sentences. Help your child understand they can talk to God like a friend:
“God, please help me be kind today.”
“Jesus, I’m scared. Please be with me.”

4. Use Bedtime and Mealtimes

Bedtime prayers help children end the day with peace, while mealtime prayers teach thankfulness. These built-in routines make prayer a daily habit without feeling forced.

5. Pray Together for Others

Show your children how to pray for friends, family, and even people they don’t know personally. This teaches compassion and reminds them that God cares for everyone.

💛 Let’s raise a generation that knows God and talks with Him daily.
